4. The Inside Scoop

“Into the Woods.” Located in beautiful upstate New York, Johnson’s rural location is either a big advantage for those who want to focus on their studies, or a disadvantage for those who want the action of a big city. Johnson is reputed for its collaborative culture, as much as for the friendliness of its staff and faculty. Johnson takes a “Performance Learning” educational approach. Learn hands-on through the student-run Johnson investment funds, and their very own virtual trading floor.
  • Johnson Unique Features
  • The Asia Connection – Johnson offers a dual-degree MBA/MA in Asian Studies with Cornell’s FALCON program, with the aim of producing American MBAs with some knowledge of Japanese and Chinese (Mandarin) language and culture.
  • Center for Sustainable Global Enterprise – While all schools seem to be in a hurry to add an “environmental” aspect to theor program, given Cornell’s agriculture school and background, this program is very real, and makes it a natural fit for applicants with a passion for the environment.
  • Big Red Ventures – This early stage Venture Capital fund is and has always been operated 100% by Johnson MBA students. Invest $50,000-200,000, and see what happens.
  • Cayuga Fund – Here students can gain hedge fund/asset management experience by being a Cayuga fund Student Manager.
  • Boas Trading Room – This is an amazing, and unique facility, a 32 seat Virtual Trading room with all the tools you need to learn. Cornell is clearly doing its best in “bringing the Street upstate!”
  • BR Consulting (BRC) – This is a student-run consulting “firm” in which you can gain real-world consulting experience, while helping entrepreneurs build their businesses.
  • Immersion Program – This is a unique Johnson offering which full-time MBA students do in their second semester. The immersion program is an intense, hands-on semester of integrated course and fieldwork in which you will be “immersed” in your specific industry or career interest.
  • Precision Essay Tips for Johnson
  • Be a Team Player – Since Johnson is such an intimate, student-run community, it’s only understandable that they look for real team players, especially those who are committed to contributing to the school.
  • Sell the adcom on Why Johnson – Johnson couldn’t be less like HBS, Wharton…even Columbia. Johnson has a VERY unique character, and is guided almost exclusively by its students and tightly-knit community. Your scores may be more than high enough to get in, but if you don’t do a good enough job explaining why you are a good fit at Cornell, you may be disappointed with your application results…
