4. The Inside Scoop

“Integrated Curriculum” Small, intimate, and very “New England”, Yale SOM offers a prestigious and Ivy League experience (think 19th century Victorian Mansions) that gives the school more prestige than one would expect given its historical rankings (often in the range of top 15-20). Most famous for its strengths in Non-Profit and Entrepreneurship, Yale’s integrated curriculum focuses on building “a new way of seeing,” rather than just business skills.
  • Yale SOM Unique Features
  • Best Non-profit School – Yale is ranked number 1 in Nonprofit by US News & World Report Strong and is well known for the emphasis it places on ethics and corporate social responsibility. Given the recent economic struggles linked, perhaps, to a lack of morals on Wall Street, this focus has perhaps never been more timely, or significant. Or trendy…
  • Loan Forgiveness for Nonprofit Students – Students who work full-time government or non-profit sectors, with incomes of $77,600 or less receive full reimbursement for their annual debt repayment on need-based loans. Not too shabby.
  • Global Exchange Opportunities – Yale offers student exchange programs with HEC Paris, IESE, the London School of Economics, and Tsinghua University. These are all the best (or among the best) schools in each of these respective countries.
  • SOM International Experience – A first-year mandatory trip integrated into the Yale Leadership Development Program.
  • SOM Entrepreneurship Program – Yale has two university-wide entrepreneurship organizations dedicated to the promotion of entrepreneurship through seminars, contests etc: Yale Entrepreneurial Institute (YEI), and Yale Entrepreneurship Society (YES).
  • New Campus in 2013 – Yale is currently building a new campus which is expected to be ready in 2013; although truth be told, their current campus (made up mostly of stately Victorian mansions) is not too shabby either.
  • “Open University” – Yale SOM students can apply for double degree programs in almost anything from Drama Studies to Medicine to Russian studies. For those who aren’t ready to complete a second degree, almost all classes from all Yale schools are open to SOM. This flexibility is rare at most other MBA programs, and many students take advantage of this opportunity.

  • Precision Essay Tips for Yale SOM
  • Show how your goals tie in with the school’s mission of “educating leaders for business and society.” – If you wanna work on Wall Street, and you wanna run Goldman Sachs, you’ve gotta think reeeeally hard about why Yale is best for you. Frankly, they may not believe you.
  • Be confident, passionate, authentic – Yale SOM is more than just about “closing that deal” or about single details, it’s about the big picture. In your essays, show the school that you can and will change the world, that you can do so through business, while keeping in mind a social mission.
